Verizon held their annual Shareholders meeting on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at the Marriot Hotel in Richmond, Virginia.  Prior to the start of the meeting, President Shumaker kicked off a rally.  Guest speakers were Jim Leaman, Secretary-Treasurer of the VA AFL-CIO, Vince Maisano, District 13 Vice President and several others.  Approximately 100 members of Local 2201 were present as well as many members across Virginia and from New York.  Three busses were needed to transport  CWA members from District 13, Pennsylvania!  Various members spoke to Verizon shareholders in support of the shareholder proposals submitted by CWA and the AFL-CIO.

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists sponsored their second annual Labor Day Parade.  Due to contract negotiations, we were unable to build a float this year but our Local looked great!  Candy and balloons was given to both children and adults as we walked the parade route.  Thanks to all who participated on such short notice and a special thanks to Joe Whitcomb and his family -- they drove from Gloucester to help!

On Saturday, July 19, 2003, several members were at the Radisson Hotel on Grace street to inform potential workers that they were being hired by Verizon as Strikebreakers.  Informational and educational flyers were distributed to all!

Due to inclement weather, we had to move the tailgate party at Park Central to the cafeteria.  Although the weather didn't help our tailgate parties to much this year, it has been most accommodating for other reasons!

On July 24, 2003, Union representatives distributed balloons that had "WE WON'T GO BACK" on them at 3011 & 3013 Hungary Spring Road, Nansemond Street, Main Street, Park Central and Warsaw.  They were all popped at 11:00 a.m. in the call centers!

"Just Practicing" pickets were held July 24, 2003 at 3011 & 3013 Hungary Spring Road, Nansemond Street, Main Street, Park Central and Warsaw.  A special thanks to the members at Park Central for their strong show of solidarity! Temporary workers were in their building today and the members clearly expressed their displeasure about replacement workers. An educational flyer was distributed to the employees and the members explaining that Verizon had hired them to be a strikebreaker!  Great job Park Central members!
